cried when she heard the news out of newtown, connecticut. she said "we always think it can't happen here, and we pray fervently that it won't. but as we know from our experience this summer, it can happen anywhere." the mayor of aurora, colorado, is still helping his community try to recover from the mass shooting there this summer where 12 people were shot and killed and another 58 people were shot but survived. he said today from aurora, "our hearts go out to the people of newtown." colorado's senator michael bennet said today, "as coloradans, we know how this type of tragedy can shake a community to its core. we are here for connecticut today." colorado's governor, john hickenlooper, he said, "we know too well what impact this kind of violence has on a community." he said that the first thing he wanted to do today was talk to his counterpart governor in connecticut, dan malloy. governor hickenlooper said, "i cannot put into words how impossible it seems to me that this can happen again so suddenly." virginia tech was the site of a mass shooting five years ago where 32 people were

of massachusetts, connecticut and the state of rhode island could look at over six inches of snow with areas possibly seeing a foot of snow. so again the chance of seeing more snow from this next storm system is increasing here. it is pulling in a lot of moisture from the gulf of mexico. that is one of the reasons why we think we could see a little more than originally anticipated. right now it is producing snow across areas in chicago, northern parts of the state of indiana that into michigan. on the southern end of the storm system we have showers and thunderstorms in louisiana, mississippi and tennessee. eventually both of these areas will be coming together and moving towards the northeast. i do quickly want to point out between these areas we're actually seeing freezing rain falling early this morning across places in arkansas and northern texas. please drive carefully out there. that is outside the city of memphis as well. western portions of state of tennessee dealing with possible icing on the roadways. otherwise a number of winter weather advisories issued for the state of new jerse
, the elementary shooting in newtown, connecticut we have been reporting a few days before that in the oregon shopping mall shooting. also recall over the summer the aurora movie theater massacre that gun involved. one of the weapons the beltway snipers used in washington, d.c. in 2002. david lee miller has been tracking today's developments. he joins us live from our new york newsroom. david lee, police say now they searched the house. they haven't been able to get in there for a while and they found somebody's remains. who is it? >> that's right. it now seems almost certain jamie that spangler is responsible for the death of his 67-year-old sister with whom he had a relationship. shortly after the rampage authorities say she couldn't be located and this afternoon authorities said they made a grizzly discovery. >> we did locate apparent human remains in the ruins of the house of 191 lake road. the medical examiner has removed those remains. again, 191 lake road is where the shooter resided with his sister. medical examiner will be working on the identification. i'm assuming that's going to t

in connecticut. >> is there anything that can be done? it seems like it's an issue that has to be on a national level which is why i think, tough mayors? is there anything that can be done at the level of, say, philadelphia governance. >> we have passed some laws in philadelphia and some have made it past the nra lawsuit. and have been sustained by our pennsylvania supreme court. but states and the federal government, there should be a series of pretty strong policies across the united states of america. and then, either states or local governments can enhance, if he want to, but should never be able to low-ball. the u.s. conference of mayors we advocated three major things. one, there should be an assault weapons' ban across united states. no reason for a civilian to ever have an assault rifle, machine gun, multiclips, and so the second part is the large magazines. >> machine guns are banned. >> fully automatic weapons. >> right. if you're putting out hundreds of rounds, you know, a minute, i heap, i'm not going to get into a debate about semiautomatic or automatic, it's a lot. right? large ma
